Department of Agronomy

The Agronomy department was set up in 1960. The character of integrated approach has been maintained in totality. A well-knit UG and PG programme with updated syllabi has been operating in the department. The research work has been programmed as per the needs of the area. The department serves as a nodal department for various extension activities for dissemination of resource management strategies to the farming community. The department serves as a core facility for running the teaching programme for UG and PG students. Under the Centre of Advanced Studies, the department has the mandate to impart training to various scientific personnel working in less privileged affiliated institutions strengthening the human resource management. The department has also the mandate to develop cost effective and appropriate production technology for efficient and optimal use of resources in a sustainable manner. It also has the responsibility for transfer of technology to the farmers and other user agencies in the jurisdiction of the university as well as other parts of the country.

The thrust areas are as follows :

Ø       Agro-eco-zonal specific problems in productivity will be tackled at the farmers' level.

Ø       The research will be diverted towards management of stresses, use of biotechnology, use  of  myco and bio-herbicides, agro-techniques for site specific problems of small and marginal farmers under constraints input supply and prospects of bio-farming and integrated nutrient management for development of precise, permanent and productive technology.

Ø       The effort will be made to solve the problems with the help of inter-disciplinary approach

Ø       For such agro-eco-zones under the jurisdiction area of the university the agronomists will be required for different disciplines of crop management.

Mission

Ø       Developing weed specific technologies for crops and cropping system.

Ø       Methodology for judicious and sustainable use of natural resources.

Ø       Generating cost effective Agro-technologies for higher benefits.

Ø       Developing human resource in field of agriculture.

Ø       Developing/modifying curricula according to need especially of Uttarakhand State.

Ø       Developing prospects of self employment.

Ø       Developing organic package and practices for crops and cropping system of Uttarakhand State.

Mandate

Ø       To develop site specific nutrient management strategies for various crops and cropping systems.

Ø       To provide site specific water resource management for high water use   efficiency/ crop production.

Ø       To assess and quantify various natural resources under different agro- climatic conditions of Uttarakhand.

Ø       To diversify cropping systems.

Ø       To document specific area ITK’s and farmers practices for substance of natural resources.

Ø       To evaluate newly developed/ existing tools/ technologies for reduction in production cost.

Ø       To develop human resource in agriculture.

Ø       To modify curricula by inclusion of production technology of crops grown mainly in Uttarakhand.

Ø       To develop new courses on medicinal and aromatic crop for under graduate level.

Infrastructure & Facilities

Department of Agronomy is one of the most important departments in College of Agriculture. It is well equipped with almost all modern facilities including UG & PG laboratories, library, computer lab, seminar room with A&V aids and proper sitting place to every staff. The detail is given below;

a.      Library

The department has separate library with computer facility. The library remains open during working hours for PG students and staff members. There is a good collection of books, journals and theses submitted by our passing students. Presently we have 694 M.Sc. and 237 Ph.D. theses in the departmental library.
