Department of Animal Science

The department has three broad areas viz. Animal Breeding, Animal Nutrition and Livestock Production & Management. The post-graduate programmes in Animal Breeding, Animal Nutrition, Dairy Husbandry and Poultry Husbandry were started in 1963-64 and Ph.D. programmes in Animal Breeding and Animal Nutrition in 1966-67. Recently, Ph.D. programmes in Dairy Husbandry and Poultry Husbandry were also started in 1999-2000. Several new P.G. courses have been developed by the department.

The thrust areas are as follows:
Cross-breeding in dairy cattle
Use of population genetics for improvement of dairy cattle and poultry
Conservation of Sahiwal cattle
Conservation of germplasm of poultry and guinea fowl
Development of inbred lines in poultry
Improvement of agro-industrial by-products
Integrated farming systems
Manipulation of rumen-environment
Assessment of nutritional status of cattle/buffaloes
Development and evaluation of new forage varieties and evaluation of poultry feeds and                 rations
Agro-eco-zonal specific problems in productivity will be tackled at the farmers' level.
