Department of Horticulture

The Department of Horticulture came into existence in 1961. The M. Sc. Ag. Horticulture programme was initiated in 1963 and Ph.D. (Horticulture) in 1976. The department is active in teaching research and extension of production technology of fruits, flowers, medicinal and aromatic plants and their post harvest management. Separate M. Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Floriculture and Landscaping have been started from the academic year 2000-01. Fifteen research projects financed by outside agencies are in operation.

The Department is currently engaged in pursuing the following specific objectives:

Ψ      To achieve excellence and relevance in education

Ψ      To develop advanced technologies for hi-tech horticulture

The thrust areas of teaching and research are as follows:

v     Plant nutrition

v     Plant growth and development

v     Nursery production and management

v     Crop Improvement

v     High density orcharding and post harvest management of major tropical fruits ( mango, guava), subtropical fruits ( litchi ), low chill temperate fruits  ( almond, peach, plum, pear ) and minor indigenous fruits (bael, karonda )

v     Floriculture and Landscaping

v     Protected cultivation of flower crops

v     Horticultural Biotechnology

v     Medicinal and Aromatic Plants
