Department of Microbiology Progress in Microbiology at a Glance The universal recognition of microbes in daily life and more so in agriculture, led to the establishment of the Department in 1960. Master’s and Ph.D. programmes were amongst the first P.G. programmes to be initiated in the University. The present emphasis of research in the Department is on cold shock proteins and microbial inoculants and molecular microbial ecology. The Ministry of Environment and Forest, Govt. of India has established a center of Research on Bacteria and Archaea with five sub-centers in the country under the All India Coordinated project on Taxonomy(AICOPTAX). The Dept. of Science & Technolgy has recognised the department under the DST-FIST sponsored in Biotechnology (ICSB) in the country and operates a research programme on Wheat Rhizobacteria in asssociation with the university of Neuchatel, Switzerland. The Department has well established laboratories for protein purification, (electrophoresis,FPLC), molecular fingerprinting(thermal cyclers,Gel documentation systems), DNA sequencing (ABI 310 automated sequencer), fermentation(14L microprocessor control system) and the associated microbiological and microscopic facilities. The department has also developed a Database of Microbial Bioresources. Those interested in the database may make request for the same by email to Dr Reeta Goel, Head (Microbiology) at rg55@rediffmail.com
