Profile

Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan is an eminent scientist and academic leader with over three decades of distinguished service in agricultural and animal biotechnology. He currently serves as Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar. Previously, he was Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor of ICAR–National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, for two and a half years, where he elevated NDRI to the First Rank among all Agricultural Universities of India and secured A+ ICAR accreditation. Earlier, he served as Director, ICAR–Central Institute for Research on Goats (CIRG), Mathura, for four years, and held various positions from Scientist to Principal Scientist at ICAR–NDRI and ICAR–IVRI.

Scientific Achievements

  • Embryonic Stem Cell Technology: Developed 5 embryonic buffalo stem cell lines and 2 spermatogonial stem cell lines.
  • Ovum Pick-Up IVF: Produced India’s first OPU-IVF Sahiwal calf Holi and the world’s first OPU-IVF yak calf Norgyal.
  • Cloning Technology: Pioneered simple hand-guided cloning in buffaloes and cattle, producing 27 cloned buffaloes including Garima, Garima-II, Shresth, Swarn, Purnima, Lalima, Rajat, Deepasha (endangered wild buffalo clone), and in 2023, India’s first cloned Gir calf Ganga.
  • Goat Reproductive Technologies: Developed semen freezing and AI technology for goats.
  • Transgenic Animal Production: Established methodologies for pharmaceutical and agricultural applications.

These technologies—OPU-IVF, goat semen freezing, and cloning—are now operational at the field level, enhancing farmers’ income and conserving elite germplasm.

Research, Teaching & Projects

Dr. Chauhan has been Principal Investigator in 11 and Co-PI in 9 externally funded projects, securing ₹23.88 crore from DBT, DST, NAIP-ICAR, and NASF. He has guided 10 Ph.D. and 9 Master’s scholars and developed 4 postgraduate courses in animal physiology and biotechnology. He has published 155+ peer-reviewed research papers, 7 books, 44 technical publications, and delivered 34 invited lectures internationally.

Dr. Chauhan has organized 5 major conferences (3 National, 2 International), including the 12th NAAS Congress at NDRI, and coordinated 14 national trainings for scientists and biotechnology students. He has served on DBT Task Forces, the NAAS Executive Council, and received multiple appreciation letters from DG, ICAR, and the Hon’ble Agriculture Minister, Government of India.

  • QS World University Ranking – Improved the university’s global QS ranking by 102 places (from 361 to 209) within three years through targeted academic, research, and outreach reforms.

  • Achieved a remarkable climb of 102 places (before my joining it was 361 rank) in the QS World University Rankings, securing 209th position globally.
  • In NIRF 2024 Rankings, secured 3rd rank among Indian Agricultural Universities and 8th across all agriculture-related institutions.
  • Introduced Annual Assessment Report for Scientist to show their work done and achievement every year.
  • Successfully implemented 100% e-office, making the administration entirely paperless.
  • Conducted three Convocations (34th, 35th, 36th) awarding degrees to 4,809 students:
    • 34th Convocation: Honorary D.Sc. conferred on Shri Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor.
    • 35th Convocation: Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu graced the ceremony as Chief Guest.
    • 36th Convocation: Honorary D.Sc. conferred on CDS General Anil Chauhan and Padma Shri Premchandra Sharma.
  • Constructed key infrastructure:
    • Gen. Bipin Rawat Hostel for 225 students (inaugurated by Hon’ble CM Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami).
    • Kasturba Bhawan Hostel expanded with a 100-bed wing by obtaining 3 Crone from ICAR.
    • The campus road, housings, library and University Auditorium (Gandhi Hall) was fully repaired and renovated.
    • Inauguration of Gold Medal Gallery, Devki Nandan Agrawal Student Recreation Centre, and campus-wide 90-camera CCTV surveillance system.
    • Established (first time) Technology Enabling Centre by obtaining funds from DST, New Delhi.
  • Promoted 109 faculty members and nearly all non-teaching staff after many years.
  • Instituted new scholarships and awards via the revitalised Alumni Association (4A).

  • Organised five consecutive editions (113th to 117th) of the All-India Farmers’ Fair & Agro-Industrial Exhibition:
    • 98,500 farmers participated; ₹30.85 million worth of seeds and planting material sold.
  • Successfully hosted the 17th Agricultural Science Congress, with over 2,000 scientists, students, and farmers— a landmark event for the university.
  • Celebrated International Year of Millets (2023) with extensive outreach promoting “Shri Anna”.
  • Received the 9th National Community Radio Award from Union Minister Shri Anurag Thakur.
  • Convened long-pending Research and Extension Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Produced 7,000–8,000 quintals of breeder seed annually—highest among Indian agricultural universities.
  • Achieved record increases in farm productivity:
    • Rice: +50.3% yield
    • Wheat: +20.7% yield

  • Produced buffalo cloned calf “Garima-II” from embryonic stem cells.

  • Developed Hand guided cloning technology in goat and buffalo and in buffalo produced many superior genetically cloned buffalo calves (Garima, Shresth, Swarn, Purnima, Lalima, Rajat, Swarupa).
  • Produced cloned calf “Deepasha” from endangered wild buffalo of Chhattisgarh.
  • Produced 5 Embryonic Stem Cell lines in buffalo. These are the only lines available in the world so far.
  • Produced GFP expressed cloned transgenic Goat and Buffalo embryos.

Technologies Developed

  • In vitro embryo production (IVF) Technology in goat, buffalo & yak, implemented all over the country.
  • Developed new protocol of Semen cryopreservation using Egg Yolk-Tris diluents in Jamunapari Goat.
  • Developed technology for Transgenic embryo production in Goat and Buffalo using hand-guided cloning.
  • Developed hand-guided Cloning Technology in Goat, Buffalo and Cattle.
  • Developed Embryonic Stem Cell Culture Technology in Goat and Buffalo.
  • Ovum–Pick Up Technology in Cattle.
  • Developed Protocol for Freezing of Goat Semen & Artificial Insemination and commercialized.
