The Department

About the Department

The department of Surgery and Radiology commences its postgraduate Master’s degree programme in the year 1964 and Ph.D. programme in 1978. The thrust areas of research in the department are anesthesiology, orthopaedics and radiology, stem cell based tissue repair and development of techniques for the treatment of animal diseases. The departmental post graduate programme derives its inherent support from strong infrastructure, quality faculty, project based research and interdisciplinary collaboration. So far, 126 students have earned their masters and 32 doctorate degree from this department. Department has organized the 2nd ISVS (1978), 27th ISVS (2003) and 44th ISVS (2022) Annual Congress of Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery and five ICAR sponsored Summer School till 2022.

Achievements:
  • A new technique-paracentesis-oculi-proved easy for extraction of ocular parasite.
  • A surgical technique for separate collection of urine and faeces in fowl evolved.
  • A simple surgical technique for ovariohysterectomy in dog developed.
  • Simple diagnostic techniques for cholecysto-graphy, pyelography, bronchography and myelography for dog developed.
  • More than 20 % increase in meat production is possible through partial castration done at 15 days of age in Goats and at one month of age in buffalo calves.
  • Effective techniques of regional anaesthesia in small and large animals evolved.
  • Location of acupoints in Goats detailed.
  • Development of modern cataract surgery in canine.
